I was thinking using tongs instead of your fingers could be a safe option.

I have netted piranha without them destroying me or the net. I'd advise if you are not comfortable with handling them that you get some needle nose pliers and a sacraficial net. If the wait and see doesn't pan out.
Worst damage if received from a netted fish would be a large-ish poly.....gotta watch the spines. And they are super slippery.

Yeah that’s what I was afraid of....them being slippery. And I’m afraid of using a towel and wiping any slime, or anything else, off their scales I’m not supposed to
