ugliest non-hybrid cichlid

All cichlids are great . . . !

Selective breeding for color morphs like EBJD can give rise to very beautiful fish without violating natural barriers the way hybrids do, IMO

I personally don't see the appeal of large Oscars, though they are extremely cute when young.
 
Ugliest cichlids:
Dovii, male Red terror, Oscar, pikes.
 
chocolates and old Jack Dempseys when they get the over weight curved spine thing going on (although I think a JD in it's prime is an amazing fish).
 
Can i get some explaination why chocolate cichlids are ugliest?

The least they can be is average whatever fish. But ugly is a bit much to describe them.. Do you think this red devil is ugly?

Because it's an entirely subjective activity and some people think they're ugly. They are a fantastic fish to keep, and fit naturally into many setups. CTU2Fan pretty much summed it up: Their non-"traditional" nuchal hump, but they're a charming fish.

I don't plan tanks around the look of any individual fish, and I certainly don't find any natural fish ugly - unconventional maybe, yes. So mine would be.

The majority of the Gymnogeophagus genus. Sure there are some stunners in there - in fact they all exhibit amazing colouration, but head shapes, particularly balzanii males, can be gorgeously ugly.

My thoughts on other opinions:

Red Devils: Agreed, especially since very few are true to their natural form.
Oscars: Captive bred perhaps, wild certainly not - they're gorgeous.
 
As far as naturally occuring species, I'd have to vote hesitatingly for Arc. nassa - those big bulging eyes on a plain brown wrapper is only a face a mother could love.
 
Ok after some long thought I setteled on Neets, they look like the kids that got picked on in high school. Not that I was involved in or approve of that stuff, just saying ;).
