:drool:If u ever decide to get rid of that thing, I'll gladly take it off ur hands...... but congrats on the great find

awesome work! I hope to have a tank in my future classroom!

Looks nice, are you worried about algae blooms being so close to the window?

I am not 100% sure exactly where it will end up in relation to the windows, or what will end up in it. I have it there for now because its out of the way. Before its set up I am going to drain and polish it, move it, add the rocks and refill.

Right now I have some young koi in one 55, and turtles in another 55 at the front of the room. I need to eliminate some tanks and get everything as organized and as "normal" looking as possible.

No leaks or cracks yet...so that's good.

I put the turtles in to stretch their legs yesterday and noticed it was irritating their eyes, so they went back in their normal tank. Last night I picked two dozen feeders and dropped half in with the turtles and other half in the new tank to test my suspicion. The ones that went in the new tank went to the bottom and died within an hour, the ones in the turtle tank that didn't get caught were still fine at the end of the day. I will take a test kit in on monday, but don't think ammonia or chlorine are the issue. I rinsed it before filling, but think it probaly has some cleaner or chemical in it.

Anything I should try when I take it back out for a washing?

Otherwise I have about 100lbs of gravel washed and ready, a shop light(since it's shop class afterall) and trim for the bottom and corners once I get the cleaning issue straightened out.

Sounds like chlorine burns to me, the eyes are the give away(when you go swimming, what do you rub?) That sounds wrong but was not as it sounded.

I think you may be right (hopefully).

I went in this morning and the water was much clearer. The turtles still had a handful of feeders that have been eluding them in their tank, so I netted two out and put them in the death tank. The feeders seemed a little slow, but the water is still unheated and unfiltered, just sitting for 5 days. The fish were still alive and swimming at the end of the day thankfully. Just for peace of mind I drained and wiped out the tank anyway after work and am going to refill it and add water conditioner tomorrow. I will probably let it sit until after the holiday and if all looks well install the trim, rocks and filters next week.

yah man, keep us updated on this. I love a good mystery!

that thing is an ugly beast, perfect for the front room of my house under my wedding pictures :) wifey would divorce me if she knew what i have planned....

Is it just me or is the tank not ugly at all and just a tank?

Between the flathead screws lining the edges from the initial build, scratches, and my bracing its not something I would put in my living room, but it is shaping up. I think it will end up decent. I cut and painted top/bottom/corner trim black, but think I may go with wood grain instead. The black just looks like a bad band aid.

Before Thanksgiving break I put in the gravel and some feeders. They were all still swimming this week, so I filled it to 85%, added a filter from the 55 and put in the turtles. So far so well. I will try to remember to take a camera in and get some new pictures as it comes along.

For filters I have a mix of 3 500gph HOBs, a Hydor 30 canister, and Merlin FBF running in the room now that I can put on it. I have been wanting to make a large DIY sand FBF for a few years and thinking this tank would be a good candidate for it. While planning the FBF I also thought it would be pretty easy to drill the tank for a sump. I need to do some more planning, but I have clearance under the workbench for a 55gallon drum. So I am thinking of running an overflow down to a 55 gallon drum with the top cut off, make a drip plate from the top, and then fill it with the extra floor pads and media I have left from my pond TT. I have a 1200gph pump and media already, and can get the barrels for free, so it seems like a logical decision. At least to someone who can't stop tinkering.

Clearly you can't stop tinkering or at least going over the options, the logical decision seem the right one in this case
