I had bought a red tailed shark a little while back from some chain pet store. He in my opinion was gorgeous about 3-4in nice and plump dark black body with silver tipped fins and a bright red tail. He loved to cruise around the tank and chase others.
Tonight I did a 100% entire tank full cleaning changed gravel and sand cleaned everything, i do this like once every 6 months, when no matter how many water changes i do the water is still bad. I had most of my fish in a pail, my dwarf puffer and raphael cat were separate. It took me about 2 hours to clean everything and i was mostly back and forth between the living room and the bathroom
I was all done cleaning brought the tank back in, filled it, set everything up etc. (I know most of you are hardcore fish keepers by the book but I never cycle my tank or any of that and have never had any issues.) I started putting the fish back in and realized I was missing a fish, my 'shark'. wtf. I looked everywhere for him ut couldnt find my fish.
I've decided he must have jumped and a cat must have got him or something, i just have no idea where he is.

:( long story short, I lost a fish.

That really sucks :S
They are truly amazing fish when kept alone in my opinion. I hate to see them chase my other fish.

I gave mine away though :(

Sorry for your loss.:(

What do you mean that your water is "bad" after six months? What is your maintenance schedule like? Size of tank? Stock? Just curious.

just cause your fish "survived" each time you filled your tank with new water without cycling it, doesn't mean you had no problems. your fish were probably burning and very irritated. but nobody can really read a fish's mind. if it doesn't hurt the owner it doesn't matter it seems.

but as for your fish, sharks can jump FAR. if theres any chance in hell you can save him, try looking within 15 feet in all directions of where you last had him. (if in a bucket).

i saw my shark hump from his holding container and slid right through a groove between my stove and the cabinets which was over 7 feet away! the stove was bolted to the floor and the cabinets imbeded in the house so in this case i couldn't save him :(. his body is still back there to this day...

Why would you clean everything-I mean atleast do research-you obviously have a computer and you are obviously competent-come on don't blame us for something you could have easily researched and avoided.

tearing down the tank and cleaning like that is the worst thing you can do. you should NEVER do that. its unnecessary and stressful for the fish, as you just saw

Couldn't agree with you more amigo.

I didn't blame anyone for anything.
I've been away for a while and the tank was aweful I shouldn't have left it for someone else to take care of but I had to. You could not see the back of the tank hrough the water. And I'm talking about a small 15 gallon tank. And no the shark was not going to stay in there his whole life, before someone starts raging on me for that to. Obviously I should have covered what the fish were in.
