I didn't blame anyone for anything.
I've been away for a while and the tank was aweful I shouldn't have left it for someone else to take care of but I had to. You could not see the back of the tank hrough the water. And I'm talking about a small 15 gallon tank. And no the shark was not going to stay in there his whole life, before someone starts raging on me for that to. Obviously I should have covered what the fish were in.

I don't mean to be rude, but you said you were gone for a while and when you got back basically you couldn't see the back of your tank?

What do you do to clean it besides every six months doing a massive clean and then replacing it with totally uncycled water? I'm not asking to be rude or anything, but I went away for three weeks and when I got home I still had pretty much pristine water conditions.

Sorry to hear about your lost fish, that really is sad.

tearing down the tank and cleaning like that is the worst thing you can do. you should NEVER do that. its unnecessary and stressful for the fish, as you just saw

This.

My main tank has been up and running for maybe 8 years now and has never had more than 50% of the water out of it, and only ever lost one fish when I was on holiday for a week and had a PH crash, (lost a 12" tinfoil :( )

happen to my RTG last month...he jumped out middle of the night..found him on the floor the next morning..RTG can jump and they jump pretty high and far!..always keep ur tank close no matter wat fish u have!

^ I don't think that is necessary. People have different way's of doing things, and different priorities.
To the OP, nobody wants to burn you, we all want to help. A few suggestions to you would be to leave the tank set up, and do partial water changes, gravel vacuming, and filter maintenance once every two weeks. I understand that you weren't in charge of the tank for a month, but the degree of dirtiness suggested in your post leads us to believe that these things weren't done, or whoever took care of your tank overfed ALOT. If you have any questions about mainteneance, please feel free to ask, we can help you get a schedule set up that won't be stressfull on your fish, will be faster, easier and cheaper than a full tank makeover. What's not to like?

I know you stated you had the dwarf puffer and raphael, what other fish do you keep in the 15g? You'll be fine with a weekly partial if your tank's not overstocked. We all have to learn lessons as we go along, so please don't feel bad.

I'd definitely get another RTS, they're fun to watch!
