UK FISH LAW, could you be prosecuted?

RAFINI WHAT ARE YOU SAYING.

Ok I'm a fish nerd but been thinking about this all night. Well didn't help had to much coffee and couldn;t sleep. Any way would it not be better if the stores were required to give more info on the fish we buy. That way people would then know what they were buying and if they still purchase the fish bad on them. This would help all involved and we wouldn't get mad because the kid at the LFS didn't know what he was doing. There will always be the ones who think I'm cool I need the biggest baddest fish but that will never change. My dad does animal control in 2 small towns here and said there is a general rule of thumb. The younger the people and the less money they have the bigger the meaner the dog they have.
But if you go back to the UK law could any of us ever keep much more than a Betta. A peacock in a 300 gallon tank is no where near living Lake Malawi. We have no way of matching their natural space there for we could not own them or any fish.

Hell, at least fish in captivity are fed and hopefully for the most part well taken care of. In the wild they could succumb to overfishing, pollution, predation, even just drying out if the spot they were in wasnt good enough for the dry season. Thats what i figure about my fish, i give them the lowest possible nitrate level i can achieve, make sure theyre well fed, make sure the water is right etc. and seperate when issues arise.

Same issue w/ wild dogs, ive seen some messed up looking feral coydogs in the woods around Chattaqua county, walked up on a group of 12 in broad daylight drinking water from a creek. Those dogs would have had a better life in a caring home. Luckily i was across from the creek and had 2 guns on me. Also didnt have to use them. I just like shooting targets lol

I personally think you are taking it too literally, its a law to stop the worst cases like large rtc and micros in 120 gallons in terrible water... people actually buying very large growing fish need to be made aware that if they buy these fish they have a responsibility to care for them. Soon you wont be able to give them away and then what will happen, these people will have to spend hundreds of pounds/dollars on pools to stay legal. But we all know for every 10 we see in cramped tanks on here there are thousands in smaller tanks and worse conditions...
Gone are the days when you could by chimps and lions In harrods and I fear soon the same will happen to other pets at risk... rtc, siver aro, tsn, nile monitora, burmese pythons ect ect...

There are some animals that should not be pets like lions chimps and so on. The reason for that is they are dangerous and capable of hurting a lot of people should they escape. Add to that they are not truly tamable and any of the primates are never trust worthy. But the way this law here is worded it sounds like they could come into your house and inspect even if you own a guppy. A smarter move would have been regulations for truly monster fish.

I would not say put a ban on the big fish because there are a lot of people who take good care of them and a ban would be unfair. But none of us know how far this law will end up going and history is proving it will end poorly.

I am watching here in Canada our national zoo association telling the big zoos to sterilize their animals. Now the only reason for this is the animal rights groups have been pushing for this for years. The association is do everything they can to appease the AR groups. When they should be telling them to take a hike. Think about the results of all zoos sterilizing their animals within 30 years most zoos will be gone is that what people want. So take a look now at this law how long before the standards are so high no one can meet them.

Remember as well a lot of animal species only exist in captivity. Hobbyist such as ourselves are keeping species going do we want laws like this to end that.

Wow, ive said it before here but Nanny State at its best

Is it really being a nanny state? Or is it caring for the welfare of animals? Encouraging responsible behaviour and suchlike?

so does this law mean feeding live fish is illegal in the uk aswell?? i guess it does! on a whole i think its a good law myself. no-one is going to come into your house and investigate you, the rspca doesnt work like that, they will only visit if you have been reported by someone.

Then why did they make this law if no one is going to investigate you are being misled my friend. 99 percent of people care for their pets and those who don't usually should not have pets. But this law here in order to enforce it officers or the wrong people will have to be in your house. Here is a word of warning be careful who you let in your house. How will you feel if a friend or neighbor reports you because he thinks your fish is not being cared for. Remember you will be wrong until you can prove your accuser wrong. These animal protection laws have gone far enough. The animals have more protection than people now and that is Wrong.

I watch the news here and a dog kills a bay and everybody wants to save the dog from being put down. Come on really it just killed a person where is common sense. We all like animals and pets but we do not need a law like this thread is about to govern us even more. The members of MFK do a great job letting people know when they have a fish they shouldn't have.
