Umbee or Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice... well hopefully I get one.... Are umbees like Cichlid Scenes rare to get? or is that umbee just a freak of nature?

Hey - I am familiar with Dovii -- personally have a mated pair.
They are fairly young - only about 6 inches long and have already bred.

I can say that there is no way I would consider giving mine up.
They are awesome!
Even though the male is REAL mean when babies are in the tank ...

I would put my finger next to the glass and he did everything possible to bite it!

Also; he would see a reflection on the surface and almost knock himself out to make sure the reflection wasn't about to get near the babies.

he literally cleared the waters surface to try biting me when I was going to clean the tank and move the wood that the wigglers were on.

I am here to tell you they are REAL GOOD parents and will defend the babies to their own death if need be!

Personally speaking; I have a ton of respect for them and the way they cared for those babies!

I will never get bored with them and for Christmas I got a 90 gallon tank just for growing out babies Parachromis dovii!

I think your math is mistaken on this one lol.

If you buy a baby fish, you have a 50% chance its gona be male.

if you buy 10 fish and want one to be a male, you have over a 100% i believe.

Doesn't work that way with umbies. This is a topic that you must have species specific research/experiance to know. And that rule certainly does not apply with all captive bred umbies esp. with some suppliers.

Depending on who was the supplier some have notoriously low male counts in their fry. Some claim to have what seem to be equal numbers.

I agree what was said about ph and other factors possibly affecting gender results.. It's been a theory and not a bad one to go with.

there both as good as each other!! theres hardly any difference in growth rate and aggression!! i've kept both and i couldnt own 1 without the other lol both great fish! if u like deep blues get a dovii or if u like deep purples get an umbee! hehe not great info but yeh hehe

so ure gunna keep them in a 120g tank... NO WAY

why not invest in a freaking larger tank like 600 gallons plus and get a male umbee and dovii! could you imagine wow!!!
