Umbee or Dovii?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im very surprised to see all the umbee responses as i have seen several umbee vs dovii threads in my 4 yrs of being here and i think this is the first one that more peeps vote for the umbee. all the other ones were dovii all the way. personally i like the looks of a dovii more but wish it would swim more like umbee

I was also suprised by all the umbee votes it was pretty much a landslide victory bit after I thought aboit ot it was a no brainer to choose the umbee hes so awesome

I had about 7 different umbees and 7 different doviis.

I found that the umbees swim around more and come at you more where as the dovii just bunk under the cover.

Having dovii is like having piranah...Just sit there.

I really don't feel this statement reflects my dovii at all. Mine is incredibly attentive and will damn near eat out of my hand.

It's not true. Umbee may be less shy at a young/small size but to say Dovii are like Piranha is a joke. If you have had Dovii over 12" in adequate conditions then I would say the statement had some weight. To say you have had 7 of each does not mean anything to me. Were they mature? Properly housed? Proper conditions? 7 do you have 7 180 Gallon tanks for there first few years of care? Having a fish does not mean much......what you do and how you grow them out means a lot.

I had piranah and multiple dovii's so I can make a comparison statement based off my personal EXPERIENCE. My male dovii was 8.5 inches when I traded him. My piranah was 6 inches when I sold him. To be honest I think my piranah was more active.

I'm not making up some random opinions , which would have been a joke if that was the case.

I think dovii are a beautiful fish.

Sorry if Dovii are not my favorite cichlid , and for being partial towards umbees.

BTW- I still think your dovii is the nicest looking dovii on MFK.

every fish is different and my doviis are boring for now and my umbee couldnt be more interactive so i chose my umbee but if it were the opposite i would chose dovii. generalizing fish is bs considering every fish has a different personality and some are just slow to catch on. and my doviis are still around 6-7 inches so they still have some growth till theyre monsters but my umbee is an epic fish and someday ill have two tanks big enough to house adult pairs of each so ill never have to chose. thanks for all the replies everyone.

All 7 were 8" and a Dovii barley starts to come around until that size. You EXPERIENCE is yours and that's all I have to say about that.

Never said they were random opinions......limited experience from what you posted in your statement

Don't be sorry about what your favorite fish is.......not even a relevant response to my post.

Thanks for the complement by the way.

Responding to my comparison as "a joke" prompted me to respond like I did.

If I don't agree with something you post , I would just tell you I don't agree instead of calling it a joke.

Anyway , I got into the cichla thing 2 months ago and I have been raising a kelberi.

Very colorful and docile.

It was a joke. No harm no foul..... my opinion.

Good luck with the new "project".

And to actually contribute something useful to your question. IMO it depends on the footprint. What is the footprint of the tank? I think any 240 is to small for an Umbee and depends on the footprint but very tight for a Dovii. That is for life...8+ yrs in IMO
