Dovii, got that predatory look, and aerodynamic face, which makes it more menacing.
Umbee got that big fish look, but not mean looking, more of a big piggy look (no offense).

This may be the case in your tanks, but I think in general there are differences to be found in behaviour even within the same species. So while your Dovii is pretty sedate and your umbee a terror, I think it's entirely possible for someone else to have a dovii that's a terror and an umbee that's gentle. Ask arapaimag about the behaviour difference between his two dovii.
Moral of the story, I don't think anyone can conclusively say that a dovii is badder than an umbee or vice versa. In terms of looks, well that's subjective. One man's junk is another man's treasure as they say.
 
oops hope i'm invited, but i agree with sicklid-holic, the dovi, like the white shark, is a point blank predator, it strikes, and kills in a burst of speed, with it's aerodynamic shape, menacing look, and an arsonal of large pointy teeth, and a nasty bite, it truly is the supreem predator. the umbee on the other hand is like a a killer whale, large, and intimidating, but not exactly capable of leaving one in a state of fearful awe, i've owned both my dovi was 18 inches when i was forced to part with him, and my umbee was about the same, both were devils, but the dovi, struck most fear in the people, who saw him, and the large food items he bit to pieces...the umbee just killed things for killing things, the dovi ate things outright, BIG things... he was and still is a large mouth bass from HELL...

That video of a huge dovii attacking a fish net is the sh*t. It always spook me everytime I crank the volume, it sounded like the tank would blast.
That video got me inspired on getting a male dovii.
 
u go into the cichlib section...and type dovii video in the search for the ciclid page...theirs gonna be a post thats gonna say something like...anyone have that dovii video...theirs gonna be a link...clik it and watch in amazment
 
Umbees are much nicer looking fish but the dovi is the true monster out of the two... And frankly I'd rather have a peacock before either of the 2 but thats just me!!!
