This may be the case in your tanks, but I think in general there are differences to be found in behaviour even within the same species. So while your Dovii is pretty sedate and your umbee a terror, I think it's entirely possible for someone else to have a dovii that's a terror and an umbee that's gentle. Ask arapaimag about the behaviour difference between his two dovii.
Moral of the story, I don't think anyone can conclusively say that a dovii is badder than an umbee or vice versa. In terms of looks, well that's subjective. One man's junk is another man's treasure as they say.

I have both Dovi and Umbie's and really enjoy them both.

I have a 8" Dovi and a 20+"Dovi. They are both males. They have completely different personalities.

I found that all Dovi's are more aggressive the SMALLER the tank they are kept in.

My large Dovi I got as a 2 year old and have owned him more than 10 years. He generally is very peaceful and believe it or not a very good community tank fish. He is in my 15k.

My smaller Dovi was given to me a few months ago by DJ's Tropics because he killed every fish he was housed with. I put him in a 180 with a baby red tail (SA) about 14". The red tail was bought in May at 2". The Dovi almost killed the RT in a matter of minutes.

I moved the Dovi quickly into a 90 with a 22"lungfish. In less than an hour the Dovi had ripped the lungfish to a point close to death.

I moved him into a 50 by himself for a few weeks.

Because I was removing several small tanks I decided to put him in my 50k+. Nolemite put him in the tank. The Dovi within seconds attacked and bit the alpha male Oscar in the tank. Within One week he killed all four sub dominant Oscars in the tank. All of which were 10 inches or more.

The personalities of each fish even within the same species differ just as they do in humans.

Either way which ever you choose will both be beautiful fish when full grown but do you want a huge mean fish in a solitary 1500 dollar tank... thats the question you must ask yourself. These 2 fish require at least a 200 gallon tank and they will not tolerate anything else in with them unless its in a massive tank or pond. So although umbee's and dovii's are amazing predators to me no fish unless its a expensive ass asian arowana will never be in a tank solo, to me its a waste of a big investment. You could put 6-7 big aggressive cichlids in a 180 like JAG,GT,JD,TEXAS,OSCAR ETC. or you can have 1 pissed off dovii or umbee for 15yrs. in one IMO boring tank........

:WTF: Some Jag’s can’t be kept with other simi aggressive fish like Oscars. You can’t conceder (all JAG,GT,JD,TEXAS ) community fish now can you. As far as housing an Umbee or Dovii in 200 gallon tank. Owning a Dovii or an Umbee is like owning a dog. A person can own one and still be content. Yes, they become huge and have a KILLER  personality and on top of this, they kill anything they can bite into (obliterate :rip ). But for you to truly understand why anyone would go to great extreme (money in your case :owned: ) to house these breathtaking cultures. You would need to spend at lest a whole day watching a tank housing an Umbee or Dovii in a 200 g/t. You would notice right away these fish are FEARLESS animals there actions, movements and feeding behaviors reflect there desire to dominate. :FIREdevil
Then again I may just buy a fish bowl and some 25$ gold fish and call it a good investment. :goldfish:

Hey everyone! I see that there is much debate over these two monster fishes whatever fish forum I go to. I myself have had experience in keeping these two fine specimans. My largest Dovii was 17 inches and my largest Umbie is 9 inches. Both of these cichlids are also my favorite of the cichlids, but if I had to choose one it would be the Dovii. Dovii in my experience are "The True Kings of the Cichlids". They possess all top predatory features and are still as personable as your own dog.

Here is a pix of my 17 inch Dovii. It loved to jump up and hit the top of my glass cover and one day after feeding it I forgot to close the top cover and came home to find it on my carpet. It was a very sad day for me.

Right now I'm currently keeping a 9 inch Male Umbie in an 180 gallon tank and also have 2 Male Green Umbies with 1 female. The Green Umbies are from a friend of mine who is good friends with Rusty Wessel who actually went on an expedition and caught true wild green umbie's from Panama. When all of them are bigger I will post up pix's of everything I have. Thanks!!!----Fred
