Why not? I let my rats out 24/7 they are litter trained and are well behaved. They don't chew on anything either. If you don't believe me, here is a video of my old rat "Mikey" who could do tricks! Your name isn't Willard is it? Lol that's pretty gross.... but I have snakes and see rats as food.

I thought rats were gross before too, but when I actually owned one I found snakes ridiculous. But hey, you like what you like and I'll like mine.
