Under stocked vs over stocked...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alex, show me tanks like those Neill showed in his post In Mfk.

Those tanks have nothing to do with JDM tanks i remember and appreciate and that took Monster to the next level,in fishkeeping.

That is a mass of unmovable fish. Show me someone proid of such a tank, please.

As to your two groups, it is genial!

Most of these fish are nowhere near fully grown, so the bio-load and cramped conditions would only continue to get worse.

The catch-22 is that as they grow, their conditions will worsen and the overstocking problem will begin to resolve itself (as the fish die off).

In most cases, these hoarders continue to buy more fish to replenish the pile of dead ones. :screwy:

I was hoping to not post pix, but Miguel, you called me out, so these are some of the tanks I was referring to.

Thanks Alex, I didn't want to be the one doing that, but you found a few that were at the top of my list.

In most cases, these hoarders continue to buy more fish to replenish the pile of dead ones.

Fish hoarders is exactly what these type of fishkeepers are, and you are right, these tanks only show a small fraction of fish (many now dead) that have passed through their hands over the years.

Ive seen a lot of people confuse clear water and good parameters for a healthy tank. Just because fish cant complain doesnt mean they are happy, and just because there arent plainly visible signs of distress doesnt mean a fish is thriving. Unfortunately theres no API test for stress.

The tanks aldiaz33 posted definitely fit my general term on what i consider over-stocked tanks in my original statement...

Personally never saw the appeal of having tanks like that...

Here is how I look at it, the more fish in the tank the less water I need to change. Eight mature oscars in a 29? No problem, 5g of fish, 5g of substrate and 19g water. Its okay though BC I use a powerhead on my UGF.

Those tanks posted are the extremes though and take either a ton of dedication or a ton of cash to keep the stock at those levels. Pretty obvious that those extremes are bad news for the most part. What about those tanks the are heavily stocked or slightly over stocked? matter of taste and perception also defines the opinion if a tank is overstocked or not.

This sounds terrible, but that fourth one is obviously overstocked looking at the species, but aesthetically it looks good to me. I do think that is at least a component of this discussion. Unhealthy or not, sometimes a tank doesnt look "right" until it is teeming with fish. Just like an anorexic model is supposed to define "beauty" even though everyone knows its unhealthy. On a certain level the appearance of a "school of fish" indicates vitality and a healthy group of fish. We have to be honest with ourselves that appearance is a monster motivation in this hobby.

(Pun intended)
