Under stocked vs over stocked...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To me at least (in a very broad and general term), would say any tank that actually requires a) more than one large water change a week (to keep parameters in check), or so b) so much over filtering that it could run a tank 4x the size of the tank its runnin with ease and c) where the fish look like they are in a crowded street i consider over-stocked...

But thats just my general over view on an over-stocked tank... Obviously there can be excpetions such as the arapima in a tank as long as its body...

I think it depends on the situation. I could keep 5 oscars in a 125 with proper filtration and decent WC's. Might be considered overstocked by some, but its do-able. Now would I keep a rtc in a 125...no.

As long as they can swim and are healthy then ill try it. A grown rtc won't be able to do such things and its health will suffer.

I think my 125gallon tank is currently overstocked. When all the big featherfin catfish come out in the evening the tank looks far to busy and full. I have compensated for this by over filtering. This will only be an issue short term tho as it wont be long untill i have my 800gallon! I have an mbu so ideally id want an understocked and over filtered tank!

nice discussion. Valid points raised.

The way I see it is a tank has 3 levels of swimming areas for fish to roam. Surface, middle, and bottom. As long as u don't go overboard on each level and the fish in each level has room to dominate and swim freely then I don't see it being overstocked. Myself I usually pick 2-3 fish max in each level depending on max capable size of fish, size of tank and filtration capacity of course.

but it can be debated, Jesse. Something can be learned from theis discussion.

I don't find this thread pointless at all. These are the type of threads ppl can actually learn something besides reading threads of ppl bashing one another...those bashing threads are the pointless ones:)
