These look like Jag juvies to me, and Jag juvies alone - not even any hybrids.
Why would this not be a real Jag ? I see there every noticable feature one normally associates a Jag with.
Sorry if I am sounding naive. But would love it if someone can highlight to me the real difference (if at all there is any) out here.

Good question. From someone who keeps and has kept and has bred both numerous Managuense and Gold Morph Managuense I can tell you that there are a few things that make them look less like Managuense. Take a look at the body shap of the first picture. Very UN-managuense. The juveniles are much more torpedo shaped then managuense of the same age. Then the Ocellatus on the caudal peduncle of the fish is unusual. And last...although NOT a good indicator...the coloration of the fish. That incredible gold coloration.

Managuense are not endemic to Honduras...let alone gold Managuense. We caught lots of fish in that Rio...no other Parachromis. This made us doubt the hybrid angle.

And you are not sounding naive. I can see a lot of WHY you ould say Managuense as well. The bottom line is that the people who have caught thousands of Managuense in the wild...Rusty Wessel, Eddie Martin, etc... are not sure. Not sure enough to take the time and effort to transposrt back a large specimen plus send fin clippings out for the DNA test.

It may end up still being Managuense....but until then...

Here's the adult specimen in Rusty's tank:

i'm interested how old they will be before they spawn,do you plan on selling the fry

The breeding depend on them. Normally Parachromis species spawn at around six inches for the male...smaller for the female. I generally don't sell fry...but I do give them away to friends.

very interesting...keep us updated!

I am leaning towards a new species. I don't think it is a hybrid. I guess we will find out. But hopefully I am considered a friend. :D I consider you one for helping me with my salvini's a few months back. MOJO is a great resource for people that like cichlids and have questions. He answered many for me. And that was the most fun I had keeping fish, was watching my salvinis pair up and then breed.
