Uneven Floor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; As you may have guessed I am a bachelor now with wives twice removed. No it is not a great look. It is not so noticeable as the pile of dirty underwear in the corner.
Haha, fair enough but I have a woman who wouldn't be too thrilled. Back when I was very into the hobby about 10 years ago, I had a large finished off room in the basement of my house that was solely dedicated to aquariums. Around 2000 gallons worth and so looks were not an issue. Not the case these days and I've gotten my girlfriend into the hobby as well so everything has to look good to the both of us. ;)

I'm using the plastic (composite) shims under my 180, on a basement floor. The only way I could see them deforming is maybe driving a steamroller over them. Unless your whole tank is sitting entirely on one, or your using a 6 leg stand, it's not gonna deform with the rest of the stand spreading weight over the floor.

as all stated, just shim the stand. The house I live in right now has an addition that was added on by someone who shouldn't and probably didn't have a contractors license, and the whole room is uneven. I shim all the stands I have in there, no issues.

Draining the tank at least 3/4 is recommended....I would drain it down (if it were my tank...and I didn't want to take the fish out....which I hate doing...drain it to give the fish just enough water to cover them.....they will be fine...) plastic shims wherever you get them just don't compress....so you will never have enough weight to crush them....wood on the other hand may. Shim it up and fill'r up. If you need to adjust, repeat process....I know you know that a level tank is a happier tank, and I'm not trying to negate ypur concerns, but an absolutely balls on level tank may not happen...don't over think it, and be patient.
My 180 in my family room is and has been for 3 yrs, off level by about 1/8"....I can live with that...but some people can't or won't...on a recently resealed tank, maybe even more so....I don't recall ever getting a tank 100% dead balls..(Joe Pesci...)

Headed to go pick up the composite shims here in a bit. I have the tank completely drained right now except the gravel as I hadn't even put fish in it yet. Will update here shortly
