Teamsters Local 480 here. And to the people that think unions arn't needed I say this,"Take them away and watch the pay fall at jobs all across this country". These greedy business owners are counting their money right now, just waiting for the unions to colapse. Ever notice it's the rich guys that own the companies that are brain washing the stupid lemmings people to hate on unions? OF COURSE HE IS, he wants to pay you minimum wage and tell you if you don't like it quit! He knows with the high un employment you can be replaced in a day! And yes even if you have skills! Think people!
Now, do I agree with everything that goes on with unions? NO! Do I want to work without a union HECK NO! I have and I got treated like dirt, overworked, underpaid, made to do things illegal ect. And you can't do anything about it either. The laws are set up for the greedy business owners, and they will not help you when you get fired for turning in your company. Besides, they will find some petty reason to get rid of you even if they are in the wrong.
Oh, Hi everybody. 1st post. I usually just read the forums but had to jump in on this one.

I agree. Unions swing big bats around here. Serious business in Alberta. Nurses union is prolly most powerful union in canada. They had the highest pay increase in Canada last 5 years. The IAM ranks second for pay increase. My benefits are so good I couldnt even think of how they could be better. Finning is also a awesome company to work for. My wife and daughter are fully taken care of as well. Thats why I give 100 percent effort at work. I know what its like to work for non union. I would never want to go back. Sure it keeps a few old lazy guys around that have no business being there. Thats the only drawback IMO. As the 2 percent pay increase took effect May 1. Just a yearly thing my union fought for in the CBA.

Hey teamster,

How about shooting a little knowledge this way... ask your local what the heck can some one do when the union is going or gone sour.

Ask what I can do when I see the officers of a local fighting over their own interests... What can I do when the local stands by when my job is outsourced.

What can I do when they let the company violate the contract for years on end. What can I do when they let the bargaining team trade away benefits cutting my medical in pieces for a dollar raise?

Tell me what do I tell the paying and non due paying members who ask me why I give a ****.

Tell me how to convince myself unions didn't die decades ago? I don't have my life on the line at work sitting in a cubicle, but I do have my mortgage on the line, and my health conditions.

Locals might be peachy up there but down here in the Red States its not easy.

If your company violates your contract file a grievance, it is illegal not to follow the contract.

Ok again. The grievance procedure is not being applied in good faith by the union. I'm impressed that seems to be an a strange notion to a lot of you.

Again I know what to do when the company acts incorrectly. What do I do when the union acts incorrectly?

From an outsider's perspective, unions seems to be antiquated and cause more problems than they solve. That being said, I've never been in a union, will never be in a union, so I certainly can't understand the intricacies. But they sure do seem bloated and top heavy....

So what is the purpose of a union? If you don't like your current economic situation, why not move? Why not change a career? Why not make changes that positively effect your life? Why does a union need to make your life better?
