My guess would be a seriously rotten frilled shark

it looks like one of the mega mouth sharks to me.
it looks like in the old pict the shark is up side down? who knows what state of decomposition it was in when those men found it.

but that makes me wonder, if it was really rotten why drag it close to living/working quarters? they could have taken a photo where they found it.

could it be some sort of large moray eel?

I don't think it's upside down. The eye still appears to be on top.

the first picture looks fake to me, looks like theres a line right where the gills should be where the head was photoshopped in

Does this look similar to a megamouth?
