the fish are small...less than 3" each for sure. especially the firemouth.

not at all. I've made sure to maintain the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, algae levels at a minimum. I change the water once a month (maybe I need to do that more frequently?). I treat the water with API's Stress Coat, Stress Zyme, and Aquarium Salt and I also use Amquel+.
 
Can you give us the readings from your water test kit?

Ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates?

I'm retesting the water right now...will post results in about 10-15 minutes.

ammonia: 0.25 ppm
nitrite: 0.25 ppm
nitrate: 10 ppm

just finished changing 25% of the water. will make changes every sunday from now on. will keep you guys updated on their demeanor to see if anything changes as a result of this. thanks :)
