Idk. My fish live outside during winter with no heaters sometimes

Hello; I unplug my heaters in the spring and plug them back in in the fall.
Hello;same and although the thermometers on my tanks read 80 degress I have noticed just how cold the water feels with the heaters unplugged.

What?
What do you set your heaters too?

Cenote azul hit 90 a couple weeks ago here in the backyard. Everything else has more shade and hasn’t climbed above 86.

Better yet, if your home is heated to at least 70* year round, never plug the heater back in. Unless you keep fish from particularly warm waters, I have found 70ish is fine for the cichlids I keep, and don't generally use a heater.

I also unplugged heaters May thru Sept for most tanks, except for heat lovering cichlids like Nandopsis haitiensus, or Alcolapia species.
For cichlids of northern Mexica like the Herichthys carpintus clade, or southern S America like Gymnogeophagus or Australoheros, I never used heaters, even though my house in WI was poorly insulated.

I’ve got calico HRPs breeding in a tank that never gets above 74 and usually is right around 70. Like my house.

since I started breeding most of my fish outside for the most part I haven’t had much need for heaters.
