Unusual aquatic pets?

Thanks all. Searching for the above has also resulted in finding a jellyfish supplier although I think their lifespan is similar at around 14 months.

How about freshwater pipefish? They sound like a challenge, but are really neat looking, and definitely not something you see a lot of people keeping.

I’m going to cast a vote for the albino Dojo loach. I have 3 and my oldest one is 12” long, about 2yrs old. Mr. Miyagi, though a she, is more like a sea kitten. She constantly wants to be petted and played with. Weighted lid is a must as I witnessed her “army crawl” out of the tank...flop onto the floor and roll across the floor to me.

I recently researched that, because they (octopus) are fascinating to me. However, you get, at most, a couple of years out of them and they are a pain in the butt to get, feed, and escape proof. Would love to do it though, I could watch an octopus move around for an hour and not get bored.
I was set on an octopus for years until I learned of their ability to squeeze through nearly any space (DON’T google it, you may stumble across a strange NSFW video that will surely scar you for life)

Octopi can fit through any opening larger then their beak as it is the only bone in their body.

You would be lucky to get 18 months out of one. Unfortunately.
I researched them pretty heavily when I kept salt, requirements are pretty tough besides the escaping thing. I realized even though i had the tank, the escape proof top, more then adaquate filtratiin, the amount of time having said animal and the known attachment level I decided to not get one.

Stingrays and Fahaka also look like two interesting options (tank size aside which I appreciate will be significantly more).

Yeah, you're lucky to get a year out of an octopus. You've also got to set up a pretty ingenious tank in order to prevent escapes. Feeding isn't too difficult, just whole seafood.
Look into dwarf cuttlefish. They're slightly less interesting than an octopus, but they live a few years, you can hatch them from eggs, they'll breed, and you can keep multiple of them. They're also much less prone to escaping.

Something I forgot to mention and haven't seen in the replies. If you spook the octopus, it will shoot ink into the tank. This necessitates an emergency large water change to keep the octopus from killing itself. For me, living in the lightning capital of America, I think this disqualifies me. One of the reasons I like living here is the thunderstorms. I imagine they get comfortable after a while, but still...
