lol just use clear pvc pipes I did that and made a thing of pipes for my fish to go through they loved it, it was pretty cool!

I agree. The clear pipes are especially nice for fish that use electicity for navigation. Their senses tell them they are in a cave so they are comfortable, but they don't realize it's clear, so you can always see them. Beats a regular cave where they would hide all the time and never be visible. Sorta kills the natural look though if that's what you're going for.

If your bio filtration is good, I don't see a problem, many members have no substrate at all.
