Up and running with a warmouth bonus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never had a warmouth, but I had a Bluegill and 3 longear sunfish. The longear sunfish males are like super duper territorial. The male longear would pick on my bluegill that was like 4 times its size LOL.

If your gonna do longear sunfish, I wouldnt keep anything in the tank that cant stand its ground. Longears are also very fast at feeding time, they can easily out compete other slower sunfish.

Just something for you to consider before you go ahead and get the longears.

Have a longear and a warmouth in a 55 together. They usually ignore eachother, but when thy do interact the longear is the aggressor. Make sure you have plenty of hiding places. I have a floating log in my tank that the warmouth loves. Good luck.

hope your not using chems.

arent blue gill horrible to cycle with? they are used to pristine water and then they are eventually in water with really high traces of ammonia.
bluegill are actually great fish to cycle with, as long as they dont have parasites, of course. and no, they are not used to pristine water conditions, more like the exact opposite of that. as with all fish, regular water changes and proper filteration will avoid high levels of ammonia and other harmful chemicals

Just a little personal quirk i guess, but i hate to see fish in a tank where one is really aggressive (Longear) and others have to hide all the time to keep from getting beat up. Id rather be more selective or have less aggressive fish in together, I suppose i just think of what a miserable life it would be if you had to hide all the time, But to each his own.

A lot of this is coming as a surprise to me. Most of what I've read on nativefish.org and nanfa described the longear as being pretty mild mannered fish, particularly if you stick to males only. Of course I've gotten responses that were polar opposites of each other on just about every question I've posted on this forum, but that is just the nature of internet bulletin boards.

If more than one fish is kept in a tank there will always be some aggresiveness at one time or another. And while a longear is agro, a warmouth isn't a slouch either.

I'll try to get some pics of the setup soon, the tank is in my classroom and I'm not huge fan of bringing my camera to work. (discplinary school)

Yes, you do get a lot of various opinions, in this and any forum. Not to say ANY of the others are wrong, I base my comments only on personal experience, I think Longear are beautiful and varies some in appearance, throughout its range, i have tried to keep them from juvy size to 5-6 inches, and they were aggressive all the way, at least the species here in indiana. Cant really comment on Warmouth I have one but he is still small, as warmouth go. Also i was glad to hear you say the fish you were getting rid of was to be breaded and consumed, although im not sure i would personally do that, its so much more acceptable than ever just releasing fish back into nature, as you hear on here occasionally. Influences beyond our control are doing enough to ruin our native creeks, streams and rivers, without we hobbyist adding to it. Thank you :headbang2
