UPDATE ON BEANI

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I`m glad you were able to save your beani and that he is doing so well now. I have some ordered and I had not heard about being able to treat bloat (which I will take precautions to avoid) with epson salts. By the looks of yours they are well worth the effort.

@Aquatik
They are super shy fish. All depends on the mood he's in. For the most part he stays out in the open, but once you get neat with a camera he hides haha. Camera shy.
He was by himself for a long time, but when I put the convicts in he came out a lot more. And SUPER AGGRESSIVE! He killed his umber girlfriend who was bigger than him at the time

@Belly Up
They are definitely well worth the effort.
From all the stories I've heard, they usually get it when they hit 3-4 inches, which is exactly when mine got it.
The Epsom salt trick literally saved my fish.

I managed to snap a couple shots of him tonight. Will load them right away here

You do know that red tail cat gets freakin huge? And it doesnt take long. One thing that I have learned about Beani, is that they can stress real easy, which in turn can cause issues. That catfish is a night time feeder, and as it grows will harass the Beani. And as soon as it is large enough to fit your plecos, convict in its mouth,it will eat them, even the beani.

I hope others chime in with their experience with the RTC, so that you dont accidentally have a major issue.

I don't have experience w/ RTC, but have heard the same. Eventually it will get big enough to try or succeed in eating that beani.

Hey Styles, glad to hear that your beani is still going strong & now at 10".

I'm also wondering what possessed you to add an RTC to that tank?

That is a gorgeous Beani! I hope he continues to grow and do well. But I share the same concerns as the others in regards to the RTC. I don't think Its worth the risk. Once that RTC becomes large enough it will eat or attempt to eat anything that will fit in its mouth. I wouldn't take the chance of stressing or losing the Beani.

Anyone know how to upload pictures from the mobile app?
I uploaded 3 pictures but doesn't look like their showing up??

And yes sorry, I know how big they get and that they can eat anything in sight. I have just always wanted one and never had a tank big enough to house one to a decent size until now.
It is only a couple inches right now so it will be fine for a while. My friend grew one up from 4 inches to about 22 inches in his 215 gallon with his red tiger motag pair and convict trio. Kept it well fed and a hiding spot just for him and he never bothered anything. He also rarely fed his frozen food, and never live food, specifically so it wouldn't go after his fish. Which is why I want mine to eat pellets.

Once it outgrows my 160 gallon I will be housing it in a 300 gallon plastic tub/pond.
Their is also 1 more 160 gallon in my house and a 130 gallon cichlid tank that I can throw him in if he starts to bug the beani.

Believe me, I learned my lesson with the beani a year ago when he got bloat. I won't be letting anything happen to him again. If anything the beani will kill the catfish before the cat stresses him out, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen either.

I have wanted one for about 10 years and held off until I knew I'd be able to properly house one. So I've done my homework haha.
I'm just stunned as to why I can't get this thing to eat pellets. It's mind boggling
