they're gar!!!!
i went the particular ditch where i caught them, because, i saw GAR spawning in it the day before
we dont have pikerel, and there are no pike in florida
so they are GAR
I never said they where not Gar... I was asking how do you know they are not an Esox species. For the record both Redfin and Chain Pickeral do exist in Florida and given your photos (very blurry and beyond adequate for ID) they could easily be just that given the similar larval morphology. Both are very similiar in appearance and behavior at this size..
This is a valid question. Just because you saw gar spawning does not mean you got gar. (I get Grass pickerel and Musky regularly with Gar fry) For your info also gar eggs do not hatch in one day... What you got where sac fry of some species and they are not by default gar just cause you saw them there. It is a little naive, if you ask me, to just assume something "just cause"..
There also seems to be a discrepancy in expected morphology between the sac fry you showed earlier and the fish you have now which I personally find interesting.. I'm not saying they are not the same fish I'm saying it is interesting and likely temperature related. The coloration of these is also interesting and not quite normal for Lepisosteus platyrhinchus or L. osseus.. Have no clue on that either but interesting...
BTW... Got that brine hatching yet? you have only a few more days and then the fun begins....
