A simple way to grade Asian arowana would be low (normal), medium (above normal), premium, super premium, and extreme premium. I have been importing Asian arowana regularly for almost 20 years now and understand the grading and pricing systems pretty well. There is line breeding involved with Asian arowana which allows the farms to offer any specific "lines"; so a "Blue Jade" is a line bred arowana with proprietary knowledge. By that I mean it could be a BBXB crossed with a green, then recrossed with a BBXB, then crossed with a red, then recrossed with a BBXB. This is how really amazing colour combinations can come out in the fish when older. The farms will never tell you exactly what is in their various lines, but experienced keepers can kind of guess/deduce the ancestry by studying various aspects of the fish' development. The same kind of approach is taken with many other tropical freshwater fish for sale (angelfish, discus, etc.). It does get very complicated in the Asian arowana hobby that many farms breed the same types of fish using the same general knowledge, but then give the fish their own brand names. So what is a "Blue Jade" for Merlion Dreamfish could be an "Absolute Blue" for another farm etc. It makes it a bit hard to make straight comparisons between the fish lines offered by the farms. This is where trust in the farm comes in. The Merlion Dreamfish farm is a premium farm known for its high quality. I have been importing regularly from them for over 10 years now.
