Update on my Potamotrygon Hystrix growth.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very nice...... what is the maximum size of hystrix?

They average out on 30cm the females are reported to grow to 35cm on some occasions.

Because they are so hardy, small in size and nice looking(thats me personally) they make one of the better potamotrygon to keep in smaller tanks. I believe only the scobina stay smaller

Unfortunately the female from the first picture died. (we expected this to happen)
On this first picture you can see under the filter.

Here I noticed there was something wrong with the female in the upper left corner so I tried to move her to the other side of the tank, but she did not respond at all :(

Will get her out of the tank now...

We knew she was weak when we took her with us... We hoped she would make it but unfortunately she was too weak.

Next shipment from Brazil is due next week, so we'll pick up another (some more) female(s) soon :)

Finally time for an update.

After the disaster of the second group of hystrix I bought, I got some extraordinary news:

Not about the dutch football team that goes to the worldcup finals(for the people that follow this) but during the semi-finale match, one of the female hystrix of the first group gave birth!

These are the first hystrix pups from one of my hystrix.

Some general information for the people that are interested. The female in question was born on the 30th March 2008 and measures about 25-30cm(10-12") now. She had an extremely long pregnancy like most hystrix do(I gues around 150 days as I don't know when she mated.) I have seen here grow for at least 3-4 months.

I found 4 pups in the tank 1 was dead and the other 3 didn't look really well, they had blood on them and they looked really weak. When I seperated them in a bucket they seemed to relax and started swimming around. I took some pictures and am moving them to a different tank as I am typing this.

I hope that the blood was from the birth I really think that I was about 1-5 minutes to late to see them get born. The tank was completely cloudy and she lay buried. When I started to siphon of water to put some fresh water in the males started chasing her.

Anyhow enough of the talk here are the pictures, I will post pictures of the mother and father(s) later.

Congratulations!!! Don't see hystrix give birth in captivity very often!!!

The mother was just over 2 years old? How big was the dad? Those pups look very small...

Thanks for the update!!
