You are in Missouri - your winters are probably colder and longer than they are in KY. Just make sure when you dig you dig deep enough to prevent the pond from freezing solid. We have had some very cold winters here and I have had a thick layer of ice on my ponds for several weeks but all the fish are fine. You also need to make sure that if your pond will freeze over that there is some way for gasses to escape. I have a floating heater that keeps a hole open in the ice. As long as you do these two things you will (and your fish will) be fine.
