STINGRAY EXPORTS FROM BRAZIL

As we have indicated before, it is currently not allowed to export stingrays from Brazil. The legislation behind the quota system ended at the end of last year and a new quota system has not been adopted yet by the Brazilian government. Within the Brazilian government it is IBAMA who is responsible for these matters. OFI has tried to contact IBAMA from the beginning of this situation. In January we received a reply that probably the new legislation would be in force within a month. Since then OFI has send emails to several contact persons within IBAMA, in cooperation with our members in Brazil, and tried to come into contact per phone. Unfortunately, due to language problems contact per telephone proved to be very difficult and emails have not been answered in the last month. Perhaps answers on this issue will come after the present CITES Animals Committee meting in Lima, where stingrays are on the agenda.

drats, that sucks..

well maybe its time for the fish farms to start breeding rays instead of over exploiting aros being easy to breed, monopolising the market with their way over priced aros..

well it was always going to happen we all knew it anyway

to tell the truth i would never own another wild caught ray now after owning captive bred rays they do sooo much better

Lucky you have the contacts so that you could buy captive bred rays. We dont have
much people that have that here in the states. A few captive bred motoros but thats about it.
