Upgrade #1 4x8x2'

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I went out to the garage yesterday thinking I'd take a couple photos and I realized the the tank looks exactly as it did when I completed screwing it all together except it's shiny now. Just finished the FG tape on the top and sides. Working overtime the next few days so hopefully Monday I can flip it over and get all the prep done on the bottom to finish taping in the next week. After that build the stand and prep for glass.

Glass is in place, I used nine tubes of silicone 1 to seal it and another 6 tubes to lay a large bead on all the tank seams in case there is any cracking. I had to cut the opening on one side of the top to allow the glass to fit into the tank, my gut feeling calculation of "it'll fit" was incorrect. I think it looks fine, just reduced the top area on the one side from 6" to 3" This was my first and hopefully only snag on this build. I laid the tank face down and placed the glass inside. All 9 tubes of silicone got applied to the glass and the glass was tipped into place then weighed down with a dozen gallon jugs of water. I smoothed all the beads, left a mess on the front but that'll be easy to clean, and ensured there were no voids in the silicone. Smoothing silicone beads under a tank while it's sitting on sawhorses is a real pain in the neck.

Gotta get moving on a stand. 20 Cinderblocks per layer, three layers so hopefully three trips to HD in the Expedition will be enough. Plus one sheet of foam for the top of the stand which is a pretty tight fit in the truck.

Likely I will be using a couple bucket filters for a month or so until I get the sump done. Cruising CL for a 4x2 tank on the cheap but no luck so far, plan B is a 110G stock tank from tractor supply.

Will get some photos up soon, I know this build thread has been lacking in photographic evidence.

Lookin good houie! I really like the clear resin/fiberglass with wood grain coming through. Ur in the home stretch keep at it

I may be stupid now, but isnt those block`s a very waste of space? You could put tons of stuff under there with another stand :) Love the tank! Keep it up!
