Upgrade planning - fun stock options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For a true gar I'm not postiive, but think they do best in a 30" wide tank...? Hence why the Pike Characins appeal to me. Look like a gar but are a manageable size.

I am so torn on the polys. I do really want LJs. But I am committed to my current crew also. I keep waffling as to whether I just do all uppers and then add Weeksii and Ornate, but then my Polli and Moke might be small/skinny enough to limit the other fish I can put in there? I don't know.

So if I just put the Teug (and maybe the Del) in there, and add LJs (ideally smaller sizes to start so my current two have even more time to grow).... The tops on my list are Faranah Lap, PBB, Faranah Endli, Koloton, and maybe a Congi if it was high contrast in patterns.

But I don't think I'd want to do all of those. Maybe 5 polys total if I went with LJs and maybe 6 if I went with UJs. Lower jaws do appeal to me though - the thought of having a Lap or Endli is way more exciting to me than Weeksii or Ornate. My favorite poly for looks currently is my Delhezi because she almost looks like a baby LJ. ;) I love how she looks more dragon/dinosaur-like.

I am just going to have to see what I end up with space in the new place and then make my decision from there.

They are on my list for sure... I wish they were more striking looking. But more outgoing knives appeal to me. I'd only do one knife though.
I like the approach with the del and teug + LJs. Know you've been wanting all things Faranah for quite some time now. :P

Plus then you could keep Roly Polli and moke with the ropefish. And you all ready know they get along. Really like the idea of dual poly tanks!

Guess it also depends on how many tanks you want up and running.

Did we figure out how approximately how many LJs and total polys for the tank if 1X WC a week is desired ? Was the number 5 or 6 thrown around for a 180g? Don't blame you for wanting less maintenance! Just keenly observing this thread, for "research purposes" lol.;).

Super excited for you and the unfolding upgrade plans :)

I'm not sure, I am the one who threw out those numbers.

I'm thinking that if LJs were in my plan I'd just want maybe 2-3 with the Teug and maybe Del. If I did upper jaws only I'd probably consider 1-2 more UJs for a total of 5-6.

It'd also depend on the other stock you want - you could have far more im sure but I don't personally want a poly carpet. Im not a collector, I'm a caretaker. ;)

Opinions, J jaws7777 ?

Sorry guys ive reallly been slacking a d havent been on much.

Its hard to say x amount of fish will produce x amount of waste (water changes) waste also is created from the fish gills (respiration) ammonia is excreted, then you have the amount and type of food to thrpw in plus fish size. This is why im a big fan of routine testing.

What i can say is this....im looking to reduce my tanks drastically. I havent figure out how many will go but 11 polys and a pearsei in a 300 gal with 100 gal sump requires me to do atleadt 2 wc per week. That not including my other tanks. Im toying with the idea of rehoming some cats and polys and having just the one tank.

So for me maintenance is the limiting factor. In a 180 i would lightly stock it.
I would probably aim for 4 or 5 polys depending on the tankmates.

Example say mags chooses a pollini my poly count would be 4 or 5.

That's where I'm at too. Especially if I have 2 tanks with my upper jaws also- I don't need a ton.

I'm still torn. I worry that say 2 LJs with the Teug is too few for aggression? I guess you just have to see. I had 3 with no aggression but UJs...

It's deffinatly a balancing act. The more you have the more maintenance obviously. I've been doing 50 to 60% water changes weekly. The tank isn't that old but as you all know it's heavily stocked. I'm running around 20 ppm nitrate atm. I'd like it to be lower and I'm looking at changing my filtration up a bit. Eventually I'll have automatic waterchanges doing 20 to 30% changes daily and I'll still do a vacuum of about 30% weekly also. So if you can work that or something like that into your routine then you can stock heavier. Even with 4 ropes, 8 polys, two geos, ctenapoma and 5 black skirt tetras it sometimes looks empty. But of coarse when everyones out it anything but empty. Some of my nitrates are from the daily feeding of the 40+ babies in the "sump" when those are old enough they will be going to every other day feedings also.

I kind of think the numbers is less important than the individual temperment. I think 2 LJ and a teug qould be fine. You know how agression can be hit or miss so no way to really tell.

Lets look at this from a different angle. What are the none polys tankmated going to be ? Say you have to decide right now.

Trying to decipher your question, Frank. ;)

I think you mean what are the poly tankmates going to be if I picked now?

If we are going with 180/220 6 foot tank I would like:
- Polleni
- Pike cichlid
- Freshwater archers or spotted pike characins for the top level.
- Eel, maybe M. Dayi. Though I reallllly want a Fire Eel I think they are better off in a larger tank for life and I'm not going to promise a larger tank right now. But it's kind of a dream fish.

I am curious about something else that would be a cool middle fish for movement but once the Polleni/Pike get larger, and with the LJs that might be pushing it? Not sure. I don't have a good grasp on stocking for these size tanks.

That is my list today. LOL I have plenty of time to work it out. That's why this is fun.

If you guys think that a Teug and 2 LJs might work I would be happy with that, because it would allow me more variety in my other stocking.

I keep asking myself if I would be happy with my current crew in the big tank with no LJs.... I don't know. The LJs appeal to me so much.

Except for the del the rest could be fine in the 60 for life. The del could to probably, but they get thick and would be better off in the bigger tank imo. Is it possible that you could upgrade your uj tank too? Like maybe a 75g? Not too much bigger and with your current crew probably be good forever del included.
