Urgent Aimara Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is upsetting to hear about the water changing. Have you tried doing it in the complete dark with only the tank light on. I dressed myself in black when my Curipira (black wolf) was acting like this. He is fine with me coming to the tank now but he is still skittish. I sneak up on my tank to view my fish mainly in low light; usually when they are turned around I make my way closer to the tank.

That's very good advice! Thanks!

If my nitrates get to out of hand before the 240 is up and running and I'm forced to do a water change, I'll try doing it in the dead of night wearing all black! Finally, I've found a legal use for my ski mask ;)

Aimara move upstream to spawn an that water IS NOT clean and clear. In my opinion the water changes might not be a good idea. Not that large anyway.Your fish is used to aged soft water with a low ph if it's wild caught, and I'm sure it is.If it were me, I might get a new plastic garbage can and age the water somewhat, then pump it in. I have had very good luck with rain water also. As for the face smashing, cut a piece of Styrofoam to fit the inside dimensions of your tank. Let it float. The only problem is if the wolf gets on top of it. You could cut it into pieces that are the width of the aquarium and leave them about 6" or so long(if you were looking at the tank head on). That way they will tip over and dump the fish back into the water if it gets on top of the Styrofoam. Make sure to use think Styrofoam. The waters surface tension will keep it "stuck" to the surface, for lack of another word. Just the ends of the tank need it really and it just has to be a tight enough fit to not move around.Seems like the nitrates are getting really high for some reason. If it's the only resident of the tank,I'd definitely get some other non-spooky target or dither fish to let it know nothing is after him/her. All these things I have tried with success at on time or another.floating plants and the plants with the suction cups on them that looks like a vine somewhat helped with a wild GATF right after I got it. The plants let them know that there is something in front of them anyway. I hope this helps. I've racked my brains on it. Really sucks and aggravating to have a fish act that way. Maybe something as simple as moving it to the bigger tank will work. Good luck.

One word: ICH!

How can this be?! I haven't had ich in any of my tanks for over 4 years. I swear, the cosmos just doesn't want me to have my dream fish! Did I royally screw up in a past life or something?!

I dosed her tank with Ich X at the rate of 50 gallons to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to be forced to do water changes on a regular basis until treatment is done. Water changes...her favorite...

I suggested bubble wrap on the lids cause anything placed on the water's surface is going to hinder O2 exchange.

Not sure what's in the med you're using but heat and salt should be all that's needed to kill ich, will also help heal the face smashing wounds quickly.

The water parameters - I'd be checking with Aquascrape and find out what they're using for water - chances are its tap, just like you're likely using so no need to mess with it. All my wolves are just fine in PH that's probably higher then anyone's tried keeping them in.

What you have isn't an epiphany or a failure in your past life. What you have is an angry wolf. Mad about being imported and mad about being bounced around. All you can do is try your best to calm it down.

IS it still alone????

have you tried Indian almond leaves for dark water ?

Buy 1" styrofoam, cut a piece as big as top of your tank, and use it as lid. Put the glass lids on top of the styrofoam to weight it down so the Aimara won't knock it off. Lower your water to half of the tank height.

I agree with Zeke. Styro, floating plants, something for it to hide under, dither(s), lower water level, rain water or mineralized r/o. All things that could be a great help. One more thing I could think of is tape some black paper to the back and two sides of the tank to give a secure feeling. I've painted all mine and all my fish are fine. Even my vitatus tiger was jumpy like this and after painting the tank and adding floating plants he was stream swimmer never touching the glass the whole time I had him.
