That is actually caused when bacteria die off in your tank. Remember, cichla like the tank HAWT 27 degrees C is too cold, put it up to 28-30.
Yeah i got it up to 28.5 now. I think the sulphur is due to a mix of waste build up and brown algae. Ive had a break out of the algae over the last few days. It dies off and cause the problem. I didnt think the waste was that much of aproblems although my dollars are very messy. im changing over to matrix filtration when i can afford it. hope there is no more problems untill then.
Try and get a sump or wet/dry filter imo way better than any canister filter for bio filtration.
I do have a wet/dry sump filter. they're rubbish in my opinion. Well not rubbish but i think they leave alot to be desired in terms of mass filtration. I find they struggle with large loads. Thats why i want to change to a matrix system. I dunno maybe mine struggles because its a ****ty design but yeah would like to upgrade later on. 
Sorry i should of stated. I want to change over to a matrix style sump. Moving away from wet/ dry filtration.
I could not find a picture of one full. Matrix sump is a completely wet system. The water flows in one side under a baffle, throught matrix (media) over a baffle, through matrix, under a baffle etc etc. Maybe you guys in the states call them something else?
