Urgent help with RTC

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mycazxin is a anit-biodic for bacterial infectiosn correct? so what you probably did is killed off your beneficial bacteria. which gave your system a re-cycle. you would recieve an extremely high ammo spike at first because of the dead biotics, (bacteria) and then waste compounded the issue. IMO stop the meds, couple of good water changes, bucket the fish, and let the tank cycle out. he'll get better, red tails are really resiliant luckily. Thank god for predatory resistance!

Yes it is and I'm pretty sure the meds are responsible somehow but if that happened wouldn't I still have ammonia show up on the test? And I really hope so he is my favourite fish

It would probably be a brief spike. when you take a water test its like a still photo and you only see what is happening at that time. So i would be willing to bet you just missed the spike, probably would have started when you first used the mycazxin and a day or so after. Just my 2 cents.

Ok thanks for your help, I will update if anything changes

He is looking a little better today, the redness has faded a bit and he is not at the surface as much but he is still swimming mid to top of the tank in the corner, his gills look fine and I read that is 1 of the 1st symptoms of amo poisoning? The redness is only around his mouth and whiskers and his whiskers look weak but apart from that and the behaviour he looks healthy :/ good colour and no marks apart from his "face" can some fish have allergies the same as people do?

Just done another test on my tank and my nitrates are sky high!! It was fine yesterday and I have never had this problem before and I haven't fed them since the water change! This is driving me crazy i just can't work out what is making my fish sick :( I am doing another 75% wc and adding a slightly higher dose of API water conditioner because my RTC has lost his slime coat today :( I really don't know what to do! I hate this!

Do a 50% water change.

We told you it wasa mmonia poisonimg.

His bioload is too big for your tank. You will nedd to get more space orsendhim to somenoe who can house it.

Allways said, Rtc should be forbidden to sell... ( nothing personal :) )

Ammonia is 0? And it has been fine up to now with every day feeding and now I only feed every other day, so I don't understand why it has happens over night? And I always test before a wc and its always A=0 NI=0 NA=-0.25 so I don't see how that indicates the set up can't cope. He is getting a much bigger tank very soon but if I was in doubt he could stay in my tank until then I would rehome him now.
