URGENT! Polys fighting

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update:

The ornapinatis x ornapinatis aggression seems to have passed. They keep to themselves now. Im about to feed them bloodworms on opposite sides of the tank. I will keep you updated on any future escalation/ relaxation.

Update: They are happily eating side by side :)))

Cant possibly explain the relief except to say it is palpable. If you're having this issue and googled to get here, this is my advice:

Allow the conflict to initiate, wait a second, and break it up. It seems like it just needed to get out of the first ornates system. Mine went at it for some eight total hours. Stay by the tank as often as you can. Put food in several locations. Fighting is hungry work! Do not worry about what you cannot change!

Godspeed friends!

Thanks man! Ive seen a bit of mild chasing today, but nothing serious. Now to add the lap O.O

+1 again with dr.b lol be careful with juvie endlis ... That is a dangerous game ... I had a 4" endli eat 2 bichirs of mine and one of them was its sibling ... Young endlis do not play well with others unless the others are bigger than it so unless that lap is at least a inch or 2 bigger than the endli I would hold off on it because even if the endli is the same size as the lap young endlis grow (very) fast mine hit 9" from 2" in a little under 3 months ... That just food for thought man don't want u losin a somewhat pricey bichir as food .... In my persanol experience/opinion a endli even at 2" will outgrow all the ones u have now quickly I'd say the first 3-4 months a endli will be at least 3-4" bigger but then will slow down some ... I say this because i have all the ones u have plus some and the endlis grow rediculous compared to the others

How would you guys recommend I separate my young?

Stock:

4x 3.5-4" Delhezi

1x WC 4" Koliba Lapradei

1x TR 3" Endlicheri

Available grow out tanks:

10g, 20g. A 37g is technically available, but I am successfully breeding guppies in it, so using it is not preferable.

I spoke extensively with the dealer who is selling me the WC Faranah Lap, and he told me it will be fine to house with my two ornatipinnis and sen in the 180.

Is the dealer you talk about Mike from JA? If so I know which lap your talking about and would agree it should be fine in the larger tank if kept well fed. As far as the others if you absolutely don't want to use a third tank I would go with the endli in the 10, Koliba and dels in the 20. If you could divide the 37 some how then I would suggest moving the Koliba into the 37. I have not had yet had a chance to get one of these CB kolibas/laps so I can't say what their behavior will be like with smaller or equal size upper kaws in the tank. If they are any thing like I have expirienced with my larger laps then the del, Koliba combo should be fine. For me though having small upper jaws and lower jaws in the same tank is something that you will always want to have an eye on.

Sure is.

Once more, thanks for the advice! I suppose I will leave the endli in the 10 until he is large enough to migrate into the 180, and keep the others in the 20. I am assuming that the Koliba will be ready to move into the big tank before the delhezi. I have heard that ornates grow pretty quickly. Being that one of my ornates has proven aggressive with new poly additions, would it be wise to allow the koliba and endli to overtake the aggressive ornate in size prior to adding them?

I'm not really sure you should label it as aggressive I'm pretty sure it is either a one time thing or a rare occurrence. Polys usually aren't aggressive towards each other given adequate food and space. As far as when to add them. I would just add them whenever you think they're ready. For the endli I would be careful because of how they will eat others. Other than that I would just focus on adding them when they are ready

Okay, here's my take on this whole situation... You're a flippin' idiot and you should NOT be allowed to own fish!

When you have critters that are not getting along, you don't add anything in. You give them a chance to work things out. They have to become secure in the new companions in the tank, without the stress of adding too many in such a short period of time.

You rearrange your tank to their pleasure. The tank is their home, not just for your personal viewing pleasure. They need to be comfortable in their home, no matter how long it will take to change it. If you care about your fish AT ALL, you will think of their comfort before your time.

If you don't have enough tanks of a decent size (45+ gallons, at least!) to separate your fish as needed, then don't go out getting more!

I have a Ornate Bichir, a Senegal Bichir, a Spotted Gar, and two Albino Bristlenose Plecostomus. I just spent yesterday (16+ hours) giving them a larger tank and arranging the whole thing so that they would be happy. Time should not matter where your fish are concerned. I view my fish as more than a "hobby." They are part of my family, important and loved. Maybe you need to reassess your "fish hobby," and get a different one!
