For what? What could possibly contaminate these bio wheels? If they were contaminated with something, wouldn't the rest of the tank, filter and other equipment also be contaminated?
For some odd reason I find amazement in how some threads can wander aimlessly for so long before someone points out the obvious. This time took only five posts, but still.

Kudos to you Sir.

So these harmful diseases that can survive dry conditions, would they not be present throughout the rest of the filter, tank, decor, etc?

So if you would need to disinfect the rest of the filter, tank, decor, etc. why not just disinfect the bio wheels?

you guys sound like toddlers. lol

I would say if they were completely dry, anything on them is dead and couldnt harm your tank if you rinsed them off. But if they are cracked or wont turn I would say get new ones.

I heard that beneficial bacteria when dried up then reintroduced to an aquarium can be toxic. I mean how much does a bio wheel really cost in the end ? Even if its just for peace of mind. Although I side with the fact that if the biowheel is contaminated that would make every other piece of the aquarium contaminated as it had BB on it as well. Nevermind keep the biowheel but clean it as you would any new tank. Sorry for my indecision

I no you are :p:ROFL:

Brian and Mike are correct bio wheels can be reused short of being soaked with a chemical or detergent and I doubt that is the case. Soaking them in water and agitating the water should show if they are clean. Good luck and enjoy.

i would just throw them in a bucket of water for a few minutes and rinse them. there can't be anything on them that can kill off all your fish. that's going overboard. unless if the previous owner always washed his filters w/ soap. but who the hell does that?
