using dead dying fish as feeders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and yes iv been doing a feeder tank of platies and guppies however i hav limited space cuz im in college and living at home so i only have a 10 for it and i could breed alot more efficiently with 2 tanks or a divided bigger tank but i try and make do with what i can. any tips for speeding up the breeding process or loosing les fish in the fry stage? i always seem to loose a handful of fry from each brood and i always make sure i watch them all eat (cuz iv been told fry easily starve to death for a variety of reasons) and the pecilure thing is there is almost never a body. are they most likley eaten by the others?

The only dead fish that I would feed to other fish are glass catfish. Most of these guys just die from transfer. If you know why the fish died, I would think it is safe. Like a fish that was attacked badly by others or got sucked into the filter.

If you just find a dead fish, especially at a LFS, it;s not worth the risk.

The way I look at it is if there are dead or dying fish in your LFS there dead or dying for a reason and it sure isn't old age.

I wouldn't do it. Who know's what caused those fish to die in the first place, and that it could be transfered to your fish. Not to mention ICH..........

I dont even like using live feeders from the fish store, let alone dead ones. I do have a few former feeder goldfish that have survived to maturity though and are now almost a foot long! Must be darwinism at work. the nasty LFS death tank weeded out the weaklings.
