Using hormones to induce breeding...is it Dangerous?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was under the impression that farming used this method of hormone injections or one similar.

I have been breeding senegals for about 2 years without hormones, the pic was taken by George Casper

TerryR: Awesome! congrats on your success, and feel free to share any tips/tricks you may have discovered :D

There are no special requirements, they are usually housed in a 36" x 18" x 18" bare bottom tank with plastic grass mats to catch the eggs.I originally used a gravel bottom but I changed this for easy cleaning. The ph is 7 to 7.5 very soft water ( it doesn't register on test kits) temp from 24 to 29c. They breed any time of the year and their diet is beefheart, high protein pellets, guppies and tadpoles when available. The fry are raised on baby brine shrimp that have been decapsulated to remove egg shells.
The pics show the grass mat in a hatching tank you can see some eggs, the brine shrimp hatchery, the parents and a 3 month old fry

The parents are about 11" and their tank is 36" x 18" x 18", they are kept on their own. The filtration is 2 plastic icecream containers fitted with goldfish bowl undergravel filters, the photo above taken in Feb 08 shows the parents in a 36" x 24" x 18" with undergravel filters. I changed to bare bottom because it was too hard to pick up stray eggs and fry.
