Using wood to Scape a large setup. The “shelf” effect to build a riparium zone

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's what I do in winter when the water level drops. They don't have the dramatic effect of malaysian though. That's such a great design wood. Manzita is nice to for a root effect.
Have you asked your local shops when they go order tk have you in mind for some large pieces? That’s how I got most of mine.

I realized I didn’t update this post with the new planting’s of anubias on the wood. I wanted something that didn’t over power the wood scape so the swords had to go.

I picked up a bunch of anubias at the local shop here and picked up some super glue gel from gorilla glue to attach the plants to the wood. Remember to use the gel form of the super glue. It’s actually easy to use. Just trim the roots of the anubias and apply a few beads into the roots. Attach them to the wood and splash water onto the glue since that’ll set it immediately. Works on wet wood too.

I may add some more lower down on the scape over time but I’m quite happy with the look now. It’s been a few weeks now and all plants and fish are doing fine. Over time the glue should get less noticeable as it slowly breaks down. By the the roots should be growing into the wood.

Forgot to mention. I’m not sure if you guys saw my build thread on this tank but I drilled several holes into the roof on the back of the tank for pothos roots. I have added pothos on top to complete the look and also provide another means to reduce nitrogenous material. It’s orobaly negligible but it looks nice.

Here’s a pic of my roof. I added some keep sakes from my tropical vacations on top.

WOW, thank you for posting. Does the malaysian wood ever sink? I have a large piece in a 120g that has been submerged for a year and it still floats. I think I need to go foraging for more wood and try what you have done.

Malaysian should sink immediately. If it isn’t, it’s likely another kind like oak.
