Wow that turbo twist is something else. I've recently obtain a UV myself and it works great for the water. I just don't know why the LFS never recommend it! And i have just read about a diatom filter too... I'll be getting one of those this weekend. I can't wait to see how well those work :D

Thats exactly what we thought when we first heard about the UV... why in the world didn't the lfs recommend this I guess they would rather us spend the money on ick treatments and such, well the UV works great we move it from tank to tank and we really need too bc of the sunlight thats comes into the room causes algea blooms... Let us know how the diatom works out...

They really are amazing machines these UV :) I am hooked all 6 tanks including my quarantine have a UV now. Mostly coral life turbo twists 2 of which are cheaper units. UV rocks :headbang2 I didn't have a algae problem but I was having issues with parasites for a while and it greatly increased the fishes ability to rehabilitate. I also have a diatom vortex its great I run it every day on a Q tank if theres an outbreak and it works wonders. Sometimes its just great to polish the water a bit more too.

So would these work on a tank that gets direct sunlight throughout the day? I don't have the tank yet, but there's a perfect spot in my foyer for a very large tank, but it gets direct sun for a about 4 hours a day. I'd love to put a tank there, but didn't know how I'd stop algae blooms...perhaps this is my answer.

Yes. I had a 20 watt UV on a 55 that got about 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. The water was clear. The tank walls were a different story.

Get a pleco and that will take care of that really fast!

Hmm, good to know. If a tank went in this location, it'd be a very large tank. I actually just measured it, I could go 8'x3'x4' - which seems to work out to around 720g. I don't know if I really want to go that big, but still it'd be a monster tank. I'd imagine that'd be a lot of uv sterilization, but it still sounds doable. I guess thats why they make mag floats though.

I guess my other option would be to put some kind of shade on the tank that could be pulled down during the day and then lifted in the evenings.

That area would be a terrific spot for a tank though, minus the sunlight so thats why I'm trying to weigh my options.

A shade will work fine as long as your kids dont break them after like 2 weeks like ours do lol...

No kids, just a zoo of animals.

Thanks for the tips and the advice in this thread - its inspired me to go crazy. Now I just gotta keep my fingers crossed that I get the promotion I'm trying for and all of this will come a lot easier.
