UV Sterilizers - Recommended?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I run mine back to back 4 x 25w giving you 100w
When you are buying the UV make sure you buy a UVS and not a UVC

UVC are for ponds and only kill blanket weed and green water

UVS are for tanks or indoor ponds and kill the above and parasite

It's easy to tell if you have the right one

UVC has a.bulb
UVS has a tube

They must also be turned on 24/7 and the tube changed every 6 month even if the tube is still working

UV is indiscriminate but it wont affect your cycle. While water does contian good BB it's the media where the greater majority of it lives. There is also the flow rate (dewell time) to consider. A high flow rate will only kill free floating algea (green water), a low flow rate is needed to sterilze the water. The manufactor will usually lable the UV with the flow rates needed based on the out come you desire.
Actually, UV must not be turned on the first 3 weeks when you start a new tank. UV is great, not only functions as a sterilizer, but also functions as a clarifier. Like Vamptrev said, water is crystal clear with UV. You need to follow the flow rate (minimum and maximum) recommended by the manufacturer of the specific UV you use. Flow rate too fast, bacteria won't be killed. Flow rate too slow, you can't sterilize the whole water column of your tank

You are talking UVA and UVB as the sceintific wavelength, T1 is talking about the different types of UV used in the hobby. UVS being UV Steriliser where the S is steriliser.

The other being C -for Clarifier - mainly killing algae.

UV is a waste of money.

I may even have a negative effect on the fish immunsystem.

Rays dont get those is my experience. (?)

Your right rays don't get White spot but other fish you keep with your rays can get it
And it's very hard to treat in a ray tank

Well then, could you tell me why that is rubbish??

I will tell you how it rubbish after you tell me how it can damage the imune system
