I disagree. :)

Hi Anders.
Please try to find and post a link to anything even remotely scientific or advanced hobbyist that supports your opinion. I think what you are saying about UV is a common myth, although perhaps you are thinking that " a challenged immune system is usually a healthy one" which I do agree with.
Thanks
Best regards
DW

I agree with Davidw and T1, Anders argument does not hold water for me albeit a fairly reasoned argument.

The resultant tank would not be bacteria FREE, just lower levels.

Do you think that the big companies that make UVs didn't do any research before putting them on the Market

Well to be fair...cosmetic companies say things like their moisturisers make you look younger as they contain "boswelox" or other rubbish which is "proven" to improve the signs of ageing BUT when investigated you would need about 200 tubs a day to get the concentration right...whilst I am on your side of the general argument I think there may be other products that can be proven to be big business that do not work.

There are also plenty of other studies linking the raising rate of asthma, allergies, and other illnesses to genetics, evolution, local, pollution types, and various other environmental factors.

If you dig further just looking into the cleaniness issue and being too clean you will see that it is well regarded that since kids do not go out to play as much as they used to in the dirt and such that we have hindered their buildup of these immunities.

In those instances we have basically completly shut off the exposure to those bacteria/viruses that woudl cause brief sickness and build up immunity. In an aquarium however you are not making the environment sterile. You can't.

Those bad bacteria, algae, ect all come into your tank via water changes, equipment, air, cat/dog dander, ect. Your tank still sees them and they will be in your tank till they are killed or minimized by a UV. Your animals are still slightly exposed to them and it should build up their immunity. You are not shifting your tank into a sterile environment like those articles you posted insinuate.

To do so you would need your tank in a air lock so that contaminants could not get in. You would need to sterilize all water before adding it to the tank as well. Those are actions that woudl mimic too much hand sanitizer, limited play outside, ect found to be afflicting our kids these days.

OK enough for now. I have to go shove a handful of dirt down my God son's throat to help him stay healthy...lol

I find UVs great and apart from one case of gill worm after a big move and new tank set up I have never had any kind of fungus or parasite in my tanks ever in 30 years of fish keeping in which time I have ALWAYS had a UV

So will continue to use UVs as long as I keep fish

It's not like they are hard to maintain just change a tube every 6 months

Its true that you wont be able to completly sterilize your tank. I never said you could. ;)

But tanks fitted with very powerfull UV´s will have a very low bacteria count pr. liter.

Thats a big problem if you breed plecos. ;)

Yeah I have to go pick up a UV for my new 125 something this month before I have it running so I can plum it in. Thinking of the Advantage UV 2000 Sterilizer 15W since it would be on my XP4 with a higher flow rate and with 30% off at my LFS it is only $74 bucks...
