Its true that you wont be able to completly sterilize your tank. I never said you could. ;)

But tank fitted with very powerfull UV will have a very low bacteria count pr. liter.

Thats a big problem is you breed plecos. ;)

improperly adding any piece of equipment to your tank would cause issues. Putting a FX5 on a 20 gallon will have you coming home to your fish plastered against the wall cursing your name.

A 15 W is too weak to actually do anything to the bacteria count. :)

I have seen what happens when you move fish fry from a tank with a powerfull UV to a tank without. Its not pretty. :)

I do not intend my UV to so much as kill bacteria as I want it more for the algae that grows from my living room window. Even shutting the blinds does not solve the problem.

I do enough water maintenance and quarentine my new fish/feeders so that I dont normally worry about disease...

A UV wont solve your algee problems. You need to look at the acutal light tubes in your tank. :)

A UV light does in fact kill algae and will offset the direct light in the room to an extent. If the 15W doesnt do it then I will add another one to my other canister...

It will only kill algee floating around the tank. :)

Any algee growing on the tank´s sides wont be effected, and so will keep spreading. :)

But buy your UV and see if it solves anything. :)

Yeah I want it to kill the floating green algae and the algae that my oscars like to pick off the gravel and spit into the water. The filter will get the clumps and the UV will kill the rest.

So long as I am by a window I am aware I will have the algae creep on the sides of the tank but that is easily handles with the brush.

Your condescending tone is noted and not much appreciated BTW...

OK enough for now. I have to go shove a handful of dirt down my God son's throat to help him stay healthy...lol

? ;)

I use smilies to show that I am in a friendly mood. :)

So I wouldent worry.

If Oscars can pick it off the gravel then it sounds more like a slime / blue green algae which is probably growing based on high light values and high feeding, I would check the Nitrate levels too as they may be high. The UV will not do a lot to this though. An Ancistrus might get rid of it but might not mix with Rays.

I have moved loads of fish from high uv to other tanks with no uv and high stocking levels and never once had any sort of problem in short or long term.

You will never find a systemised shop, breeder or wholesaler running without UV on the systems.

High levels of light are my issue. My oscars and the terror do not let any food sneak past them though the oscars are messy eaters. My current 2 Pimelodus blochii clean up whatever falls and I plan on adding 2 Pictus once I make the move to the 125 as well as 1-2 Ancistrus. My common plec is useless and I would have him not make the move save for the fact that my wife bought him and I dont have much say in the matter.

I dont have rays so all good there. :) As much as I woudl want one I do not have the space for them to live the life that they should. A 125 gal would not allow me to keep them for life and thus they have to wait till I can get approval fromthe wife for a much larger tank in the basement with more floor space and easily controllable lighting.
