So most of these are inline before a canister? Do you try and match the flow ratings between the 2?

You will want them after the canister and yes.

Or I guess you could get separate pumps for each.

Our UV sterilizer is a passive system. Instead of the return line from the FX5 going back to the tank, it runs through the UV sterilizer first and then back to the tank. The FX5 pushes the water through the UV sterilizer and back into the tank.

The outside wall of our living room is floor to ceiling picture windows. There are also two large skylights in the room. Our 300 gallon is in sunlight all day long, and developed a green water problem. Since we couldn't control the amount of light hitting the tank, we connected a 40 Watt Lifeguard UV sterilizer to the FX-5 filter. The UV sterilizer very quickly cleared up the green water problem.

Before the UV sterilizer was added to our filtration system:

they are not just for green water they are for killing parasites as well

i have been using TMC vectron UVs years

white spoy huh i havent had that since the late 80s

if you are running less than a 30w uv after a fx5 then the flow rate is to much

i think the most you can pass throw a 25w is 1700lph

you need to change the bulb in a UV every 6 months so make sure you make note of when you 1st started using it

their are bulbs that can last for 1yr on the market now

a UV should be turned on 24/7 7 days per week dont listurn to people who say they turn it off and their is no need for it to be on 24/7 thats rubbish

UV are great but dont get the pond type they are a waste of time for a tank and work in a diffrent way

i wouldnt run a tank without one

If i got a 280gal tank and use a 18watt uvc. will it be sufficient?

from what i've been reading, my understanding of things is that you pick a UV lamp wattage that would match the pump's flow. I just don't know what wattage would do well for mine. (i have a 700l/h and a 900 l/h) would i need to put 2 lamps?
What is your pump's flow rate? maybe the experts can give us some suggestions...
