UV unit?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for a huge tank what about using a pond sterilizer, it seems that a lot of pond equipment does the same thing but is much cheaper.
I'm going to go to uv more to keep disease from spreading from one tank to another
( I have a mixed tank that's doing ok but am getting in some fairly expensive fish that will be in a tank next to it
I have to ponder theimmune system thing and it's really late
far as i'm concerned the fewer bugs the better and if you can knock out a few pathogens go for it
I've heard from some people that their fish did great until they took off the uv
then croaked
think about it
these might have been delicate fish who were stressed and could not tolerate an immune system challenge.
in other words they may have died much earlier without the uv

The set up I have seen in some public aquariums is that the piping coming from the tanks runs through some clear tubing through a uv bank and then to the filter. This is because they run multiple tanks off the cenral filter systems, tanks with similar needs are grouped so that group is handled by a single filter system, the uv on the inflow means that most parasites/ organisms are killed before they reach the filters. In this way the fish are never exposed to the hard uv.
