]V[onster in the making!! FW BB Grouper

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when I bought him he was already in FW with a slight salt content... I keep a slight salt content in my tanks as well so hopefully he thrives for me

Epinephelus lanceolatus. From what I read he should do fine in FW while he's young but as he gets older he'll need a marine environment. Saw the price tag on one of these guys and:jaw:. Hard to believe people eat them.

from old posts, these guys are such big eaters that if they have too much competition for food then they get stressed and have bad results. I think it should be a solo tank fish

Looks great Mike mine took a couple of days to start eating as well, after 3-4 days he started eating shrimp and silversides already. Took 2-3 days to slowly acclimate these guys to full freshwater and have them eat well.

You can find these fish in full saltwater at lfs for reasonable prices and slowly acclimate them to freshwater. There's no such thing as a freshwater species, but like many species can live in freshwater for lengths of time, usually when juveniles. There's no telling how long they will last in freshwater but Wes has had one in freshwater going on two years and is now over 24". But a 24" fish is still just a baby. I would suspect the older the fish gets the more it will need salt as if it stays in freshwater too long it will slowly start to overwork the organs built for saltwater and eventually perish. But we'll see. Most of the so called freshwater BB grouper have died in the hands of very experienced keepers. Wes is the only on I know of that has kept one in freshwater for any length of time and I can bet he is on the boarderline of being brackish in his tank. You can do the same with a panther grouper and many other saltwater species. Same with freshwater species to salt like mollies, platys, monos' and many others. I don't know why if people really like this fish and want to keep it healthy and thriving, why not just set up a nice saltwater tank for them? I just don't get it.

Anyway, good luck and I hope he makes it. Keep us truthfully updated. :)

Have these ever grown to adult size and thrived in FW?

same with lates calcarifer, the barramundi, they live in the ocean as adults and can reach up to 5 feet in lenght, too big for most aquariums... who's raised an adult of those? :irked:

Good luck with your new pick up, they are very intersting animals...pic of mine
