Would it be possible to put a piece of driftwood in a vacum bag like used in boat building and either just use water or epoxy to displace the air in the driftwood and make it sink?

Not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but from what I gather, you want place a piece of driftwood in a bag, and use a vacuum sealer to force water into the wood? The problem lies in that the vacuum sealer would suck the water out, and likely be destroyed.

it should work i understand what you mean like how they make fiberglass airplanes right?

If the bag were strong enough and you could pull a high enough vacuum to draw vapor from the wood till no more comes out (several days to a week), then inject pure (?) water into the bag and let soak for a week or two...yes.

But I don't think even Johnptc would try this :D.

Sounds easier to just put a rock on your wood until it stays submerged on it's own.

Vacuum sealing sounds plausible. Basically, fill a bag large enough to house the driftwood and I'd guess water in the same size as the driftwood, suck all the air out, and let is "marinade". Just like the infomercials with the onion sucking in the colored water. I'm with ya. You'd need an industrial vacuum unit. The counter type will not work because of size limitations and vacuum pressure. Good luck.

sweet idea. you just need the equipment at u'r disposal. even with a smaller type unit it would help the process along. maybe if u add salt to the equation it would work even quicker. i heard the salt helps draw out the tannins and things too.
