Don't know much about pikes but non of the 4 species in the hydrolycus genus (armatus, scomb, tat, wallacei) would be appropriate for a 40 breeder, let alone thrive...... As a grow out tank sure. This list also includes Cynodon gibbus and rhaphiodon vulpinus. Nope. Sorry.

Find a Charax species. Its like a micro payara that won't get over 6", teeth and all.

Thank you, I knew that there must be a similar species that was smaller, I did read into hydro species and knew that they weren't a option but Vampire tetra is a very wide term. Any idea where I could find some charax g. ? I'm looking on aqua bid but no luck thus far.

Thanks for the input man, Had a feeling none of the hydros/ rhaph's would be small enough.

Maybe a smaller species of freshwater barracuda?

Very hard for a predetory characin to "thrive" in a 40 gallon. Try some exodons.

Jeff rapps has some roeboides guatemalensis very much like the charax chicxulub told you about they max out about 6-7 inches from what ive read. Another mini predatory characin.

They would work too. One of the vendors on here had some Charax recently, but I can't remember who.
