here is photos of the fish i bought him at brothers pet store in independence, missouri. he been eating a lil. i got some medicine and they told me to run my aquarium without any media in the filter just a white pad to cure the sore for 7 days.

What is the meds for? If its for Ich, they are just milking you for Funds. Ich is one of the easiest fixers in the hobby. Bump Temp to about 82* (I would actually say keep it at this level) and add aquarium salt. Do a water change once a week and add salt when you need it. Sorry if it is not the info you need, I didnt read all the posts and I do beleive he is eating, just at night though, A real skittish (scared) fish

How big of tank is it in? No media in the filter??? WTF? Watch your parameters..... NOT a good idea IMO. Want it to heal fast? just jack the temp up to around 86 and add salt (FW salt) But if it's clostrophobic cause the tank is too small then it will never go away. If you need help ask here......... If they can't even tell you what species it is I wouldn't listen to thier advice...... Payara are delicate.

Very true. By the way it is a Scomb and Scomb is the most delicate of the 4 Species.

Always keep media with any fish and when using meds you usually only take out the carbon, not the media...no, no

these guys know what they are talking about. it dosnt sound like ur guy at ur lfs does.... Dont remove ur media!!!! i dont know what he is thinking:screwy:

a little salt is ur best bet.

they take a while to get used to their tank. give him a few and he'll be fine.

sweet fish!

If you are using Salt water salt, problem solved. Hes banging the glass cause hes trying to jump out

Here is the salt you need. it also cures (from what it sounds like) everything that your having problems with. This salt helps releive stress on fish, speed up the process on healing wounds (fish only;)) and cures Ich (the white cloud that builds slowly on a fishes eye or the white spots that form on fish that have no scales... clown loaches, in your case... scomb aka the payara you own).
Just follow the instructions on the box for beginers and as you go, you will be able to change things around a lil...

P.S...
Just a tip.... when I use the salt I pour some into a empty 16oz. aquafina bottle (or something that held only water<--- very important) and then fill up the bottle half way with HOT-warm water and it breaks down the salt faster. then shake the bottle till there is NO MORE SALT visible.
Then pour it in to the tank slowly or do the drip method (using a air hose...one side in the bottle and the other end with a knot ending in your tank. Adjust the knot for the flow after you suck some of the water to start that flow). Also keep your tank temp between 82-86* at all times. the heat and Ich dont get along

Hope this helps... oh yeah. Throw your Carbon back in your filter (for about 2 weeks then take it out or change it like your suppos to) to kill the Meds in the tank. Payaras are not good with Meds what so ever...
Salt is your/their best friend:D

Turn your lights off in the tank for a few days, that might be one reason he is bashing in the tank, unless you are ugly and keep scaring
him:ROFL:J/K;):D (had to throw that in there:D)
And you own a Scomb (do a search under Scomb for a lil more info)

Your Payara is a Scomb.... Hydrolycus Scomberoides. Raise your temp. 82-86. Get FRESH WATER salt. Easiest to find is made by either doc wellfish or API. Either way it will be in a milk carton looking container. Do a 30-50% waterchange then dose the salt. Like 1 TBSP/5 gallons or whatever the directions on the package are. Cover 3 sides of the tank. If you can paint them flat black. If not get a black background and put it on both sides and the back. Add some floating plants to dim the light. And add plants to BOTH ends of the tank. It is likely banging its face against the glass trying to get out. Put plants in the way so it can't get to the glass. Low light and some cover. Keep traffic in the room it's tanks in low or cover the tank for a while. You still need to tell us what size tank it's in...... as mentioned previously if the tank is too small then there's nothing to do to stop the fish from doing what it's doing. I REALLY hope it's in at least a 75 beings it is one of the most skiddish payara and judging by the pic it looks to be decent sized (for a Scomb).... Now again.... What size of tank is it in?

Cover 3 sides of the tank.

On a side note, when i had my Scomb (way back before I discovered Monsters:naughty:... sorry didnt know where i was going with that:D), i went to Petco and bought some glow in the dark plastic shells and glued them on the 3 sides of the tank. Kind of like a reminder that "there is something here foo". Id say about a week later I noticed his face was healing up so I assumed he got the hint:D

After I just peeled the glue right off the glass (dont know if it would be harder on Acrylic thou)

I figured this stuff out with my Rhaphs. Lil buggers are WAY skiddish at 3-4 inches...IME worse than Scombs.... You can either go to all this trouble and keep them in a tank that's too small OR you can give them the room they need/deserve and not have to worry about it. I'm sure both the owner and the fish would greatly benefit by the latter of the 2 choices.

As has already been said. You have a Scomb, They do take some time to settle. I always black out the sides as well as the back to help reduce the class banging. Good to here he is eating. He looks in good shape. I normally do a 20% water change every week.

OMG! remove the filter media. Never ever do that. The reason you should not do this is because all the bacteria in the filter media will die off and you will have to re cycle it again. Not to mention with no media bacteria in there to convert the Ammonia you will poison and kill the fish.

Normally you remove Carbon from your filter as it absorbs some of the elements used to cure a number of fish related ill's.
