Vatf grow out

The swimming in circles against the glass I've found is a sign of stress. Normally I'd say that this is because of your water parameters, but he is brand new and that could be the cause.

Still, check your water. Ammonia and no2 should be zero and no3 should be no more than 20. I've found that ATF tend to do that circle glass spaz thing (I know exactly what you're talking about) when no3 gets above 20 or anything else gets above 0.

EDIT- Also, a moon light is critical when they are smaller. It REALLY helps to control what I call night terrors. If your main lights are on, leave them off for a day or two with only the moon lights on. Also, I suspect that he's not calm when you're at the tank; I rather expect that he's just more worried about watching you than trying to do the circle spaz.

Judging from pics posted on this site, a very large number of our members.

I'd hate to see what would happen in my tanks without moonlights....... Wouldn't be good.

You do realize that African tigerfish come from very dark murky brown water. There's no moon light getting through that. Just turn the lights out and go to bed. Geez, oh wait, what happens when there's a cloudy or rainy night and there's no moon out? All the fish must be going crazy in the wild and must be dragging their faces against rocks lol- get a clue!

A couple of things

There's a many ways to prove a point or express yourself without being that's effective and acceptable here. Being sarcastic to express that you think someone else's opinion is nonsense ie: "get real" and "get a clue" among others isn't one of those ways.

Your questioning someone who spent quite a bit of time observing and documenting his fish so he could increase their survival rate and overall health and well being. With more dedication then many I might add, honestly I envy the dedication he shows to the hobby. Check some stickies and you'll see for yourself the dedication he's shown to the species he keeps.

In nature there's no need for moon light because the fish aren't living in small confined spaces. I think you can agree that when living in a more confined space a fish is more likely to run into an obstacle at death inducing speeds then in nature, right?

I also think you can agree that death occurs more often in nature then we'd like it to occur in our home aquarium. So those few Tigers that actually run into things causing their death doesn't matter to nature because there's hundreds of others while we in the hobby only have the few in our tank. So we have to be more proactive then nature since our goals maybe the same but our available space and other factors are different.

With that said a night light(moon light) can help stop a young tiger from being spooked by other tankmates while also helping them define the space they're currently in. A good way to help stop deaths from high speed impacts in the home aquarium in many aquarists opinions.

I hope this helps you understand the opinions you've been questioning as nonsensical by helping you understand the reasoning behind them. Now I'll admit that we may find out in the future that such precautions are unnecessary(anythings possible) but the logical deduction behind these opinions is sound enough for them not to just be laughed off.

Very well said koltsixx, i agree with you i have read many of Chicxulub's stickys and value his input on my atf, with that said the im running my moonlights only right now seems calmer now and has stopped his spazing circles on the glass. He is being a pain with taking tilapia tho, he will eat almost a whole frozen bloodworm cube to himself but will only grab tilapia then spit it out, do i just keep trying tilapia untill he takes it or is there a trick? Defininitly dont want to starve him this young.

Being off live is already half the battle, good job. Two things I would try though, 1 soak the tilapia in blood worms before throwing in; or 2 tie the tilapia to some fishing line and jiggle it around in the tank as if it was live.

I think i will try the soaking in bloodworms first because he already grabs the tilapia just spits it out after, but if that doesnt work i will go with fishing line trick. Any other foods to vary his diet? Obviously i want to get him on pellets asap but would like a wide range of food for growth.

Shrimp tilapia and pellets is the main things I think, maybe silversides.
