As some of you know I have a baby ATF ( suspected vittatus ) if it is a vittatus will it grow big enough to stay off of the menu of an average RTC? ( by average I mean around 3' because that's the biggest i'v seen in home aquaria ) i'v always had my heart set on an RTC but I really like tiger fish now I own 1.

So, do you think the vittatus will be ok? Or show I swap it out for a goliath?

Max size will be OK together, but the ATF will need to be huge before adding the RTC .... like ATF 14-18 inches and RTC 8-10 inches

Yea I know that but I can only get tiny ATFs so if I ended up needing a goliath I would have to start all over again lol and I need to get the tank built ready for the RTC before I buy 1 anyway.

Do you think it's worth trying to get a GATF as well and grow them out together and just keep the 1 I like best when they are big enough?

Even then I wouldn't trust it, NEVER trust RTCs or TSNs.

ETA: Better yet, just don't trust catfish period.

So you think go for the goliath?

Even at that point it's going to take a long time to get the ATF up to a size that would probably be necessary to not be considered lunch. They are long slender fish that would make for an easy meal. What size tank or pond are these monsters going into?

Yea I know but I got time :) just don't want to spend probably a year or more growing out my vittatus to then have to start again with the goliath.

ATM the ATF is in a 100g but he is under 3" ATM and soon as i'v moved house I am going to start building an aprox 800g with a 4x10' footprint and see how they go, if they outgrow that the new house has a decent sized garden to build a bigger 1 :p

2 ATF's are generally a no no as well, get 1 or 4 + ...... I don't think it makes a difference whether you go Goliath or Vit since their growth rates are similar, 1 just has a bigger max size

Ok I won't try that then but now idk what to do lol I have read on here that the average max size of the vittatus is just under 20" in the aquarium and I know that a red tail has the potential to eat something close to its own size so wouldn't the vittatus eventually get caught out by a hungry 3' RTC?

Also do you know the average max size for the goliath? I always plan for them reaching their max wild size but what is likely achievable in anaquarium?
